Characters: Jack Harkness

Captain Jack Harkness is a fictional character played by John Barrowman in Doctor Who and its spin-off series, Torchwood. He first appears in the 2005 Doctor Who episode "The Empty Child" and reappears throughout the rest of the 2005 series as a companion of the ninth incarnation of the series' protagonist the Doctor. Jack goes on to become the central character in Torchwood, an adult-themed spin-off of Doctor Who. He returns in the 2007 series of Doctor Who, reuniting with the tenth incarnation of the Doctor, and returned again for the 2008 series.

In the programme's narrative, Jack is a time traveller and former con man from the 51st century. In contrast to the wiser and older Doctor, Jack is a man of action, more willing to see the hands-on solution to the problem at hand. As a consequence of his death and resurrection in the 2005 series finale of Doctor Who, the character becomes immortal, a lasting change throughout his appearances in both series. Jack eventually becomes the leader of Torchwood, a British organisation dedicated to combating alien threats. Adding another layer to the character is a vague backstory which is gradually revealed as both programmes progress.

The Doctor is a Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey and the constellation of Kasterborous (Thanks Adv!) The Doctor is approximately 903, and is always forgetting his age. He has travelled with many people, such as Rose Tyler, Martha Jones and Donna Noble. His planet burned in the Time War, along with most of his people. He met The Master when Martha Jones was with him. The Master was another Time Lord, just like him. The Doctor wasn't going to kill him, just "keep" him, but eventually, he was killed with a gun by Lucy Saxon, and refused to regenerate. That was the only other Time Lord the Doctor had met after the Time War.

Donna Noble appeared in the Doctor's TARDIS on her wedding day. Not knowing how she got there, the Doctor went to investigate on earth with her, and eventually caught the Racnoss. Donna's "would-be" husband turned out to be her sidekick, and eventually died along with the Racnoss. After that, Donna didn't think she'd see the Doctor again, until they met each other in Adipose Industries to invesitgate the sinister Adipose. After that, Donna became the Doctor's partner, and eventually had to have her mind wiped, unknowing what she had done with the Doctor.

Rose Tyler was brought up in London with her mother Jackie Tyler. She is an only child, and her father passed away whilst she was a baby. When she worked in Henriks, there was an accident with "plastic shop window dummies", also known as Autons. When she and the Doctor saved the world, he offered her a few trips, which she accepted. Eventually she got trapped in a parallel world, and was not allowed to see the Doctor again. Eventually she did, but then permanently got trapped there again.

Martha Jones was born and brought up in London, alongside her Mother Francine, Father Clyde, Sister Tish and Brother Leo. Her parents divorced a few years ago, and her father had a new girlfriend. Quite soon after that, they split up. Martha Jones was training to be a Doctor in the Royal Hope Hospital. The Hospital was transported to the moon by the Judoon using a H20 Scoop. She met the Doctor, and saved his life, and everyone elses. As a reward he offered her a trip, then two, then three, and then he dropped her off home, where yet another incident happened. After that she became a proper companion, and saved the Doctor and the Universe from the Master.

Monster Files: Pyrovile

Pyroviles were humanoids with a rock-based form with a magma interior. They were able to shoot flames out of their mouths, which could easily turn a Human to ashes in seconds. They could be killed by sufficient quantities of water, their internal heat being snuffed out and their bodies solidifying. They were tall beings, reaching up to about 10 metres in height and resembling oversized Roman soldiers. Pyroviles came in two varieties - a shorter, easily-destroyed "Foot Soldier" and more advanced, fully grown Pyroviles, which could reach over twice this height.

Monster Files: Sontarans

The Sontarans are a race of humanoids with a stocky build, greenish brown skin, and a distinctive dome-shaped head. Ross Jenkins in "The Sontaran Stratagem" describes a Sontaran as resembling "a talking baked potato" but The Doctor sticks up for the Sontarans by saying to them he looks like a pink weasel.

Sontarans come from a large, dense planet named Sontar in the "southern spiral arm of the galaxy" which has a very strong gravitational field, which explains their compact stocky form. They also are far stronger than humans.

Although physically formidable, the Sontarans' weak spot is the "probic vent" at the back of their neck, through which they draw nutrition. It is also part of their cloning process. They have been killed by targeting that location with a knife, a screwdriver and an arrow, even something as simple as a squash ball aimed at that point is capable of incapacitating them temporarily ("The Sontaran Stratagem"). They are also vulnerable to "coronic acid",

Monster Files: Vashta Nerada

The Vashta Nerada were microscopic beings that lived in swarms, thousands strong. These swarms were able to strip a creature to its bare bones in milliseconds and the Doctor once described them as "piranhas of the air". While these swarms were not common, they inspired a fear of the dark in most species across the Universe, since any shadow could be made of Vashta Nerada. Both the Doctor and Jack Harkness believed they had no weaknesses and that the only thing to do was to run.

The Vashta Nerada lived in the darkness and cast shadows when they entered the light - even to the extent of stopping the reach of light from fission lamps. They would mimic the shadows of their prey in order to get close, which meant staying in the light was the victim's only option for escape.

Monster Files: Cybermen

The Cybermen are a fictional race of cyborgs who are amongst the most persistent enemies of the Doctor in the British science fiction television series, Doctor Who. Cybermen were originally a wholly organic species of humanoids originating on Earth's twin planet Mondas that began to implant more and more artificial parts into their bodies as a means of self-preservation. This led to the race becoming coldly logical and calculating, with emotions usually only shown when naked aggression was called for.
They were created by Dr. Kit Pedler (the unofficial scientific advisor to the programme) and Gerry Davis in 1966, first appearing in the serial, The Tenth Planet, the last to feature William Hartnell as the First Doctor. They have since been featured numerous times in their extreme attempts to survive through conquest.

Monster Files: Ood

The Ood are a humanoid species with coleoid tentacles on the lower portions of their faces. In the distant future (circa 42nd century), the Ood are a slave race to humanity, performing menial tasks, and it is claimed that every human has an Ood servant. According to human characters in their first appearance, the Ood offer themselves for servitude willingly, having no goals of their own except to be given orders and to serve. It is also claimed that they cannot look after themselves, and if they do not receive orders, they pine away and die. However, mention is made of a group called the "Friends of the Ood" who are apparently lobbying for Ood freedom. Ood also have purple blood.

Monster Files: Judoon

The Judoon are a race of mercenary police first appearing in the episode "Smith and Jones" (2007). They are basically humanoid in form, have heads that look like that of a rhinoceros, and wear black, bulky armour with heavy boots. As explained by David Tennant in a later interview, the name Judoon and the fact that the episode they appear in is set on the moon is an in-joke from the scriptwriter. As Tennant naturally has a Scottish accent one of the harder sounds to pronounce with an English accent is the 'oon' sound at the end of both words, including the line "a Judoon platoon upon the Moon".

Judoon are galactic police, brutal in their application of the law and highly logical in their battle tactics, but not very intelligent. They have no jurisdiction on Earth and no authority to deal with human crime, so when a fugitive alien hid out in an Earth hospital they transported the building to the moon. The Judoon carry energy weapons which can incinerate humans. In the hospital the Squad Leader is the only one seen to remove his helmet.

Monster Files: Isolus

The Isolus are an alien species, tiny spore-like creatures traveling through space, first appearing in the episode "Fear Her". In that episode, one of them was separated from the swarm and the creature wound up on Earth, inhabiting a young English girl named Chloe Webber. The Isolus was confused by Chloe's fears of her father and, acting through her, trapped neighborhood children in Chloe's crayon drawings. The Isolus released Chloe when the Doctor showed it the love the human race could produce in the events just before the 2012 Summer Olympics. An Isolus is a creature of intense emotion and it is sheer need to be together that keeps them alive.

Monster Files: Hath

They appear as roughly humanoid fish-like creatures, with canisters of green liquid fitted to their faces. They are intelligent, emotional creatures — one formed a friendship with Martha Jones, and saved her life at the cost of its own. They seem fully sentient and while they do not speak a language intelligible to humans (even with the TARDIS's translation device), the two races planned to colonise the planet Messaline together. However, they later turned on each other before their eventual reconciliation.

Monster Files: Gelth

The Gelth were intelligent gaseous lifeforms, blue and spectral in nature, who claimed to have lost their corporeal forms as a consequence of the Time War. They arrived on Earth via the spacetime rift at an undertaker's house in 1869 Cardiff and proceeded to take possession of recently deceased corpses. Their forms could not be maintained for long in Earth's atmosphere and they required a gaseous medium to sustain them — gas from decomposing bodies or coal gas in the gas pipes common to Victorian era households.

The Futurekind are a barbaric humanoid race with pointed teeth and primitive language skills, who appear in the 2007 episode "Utopia", set in the year 100 trillion when the universe is coming to an end. The human survivors describe the Futurekind as what they may become if they do not reach 'Utopia'. The Futurekind are seen to be aggressive towards normal humans, hunting any they find.

Monster Files: Daleks

Daleks have little to no individual personality, ostensibly no emotions other than hatred and anger, and a strict command structure, conditioned to obey superior orders. Dalek speech is characterised by repeated phrases, and by orders given to themselves and to others. Dalek vocal inflection suggests perpetual anger, sometimes verging on hysteria.

Over the course of the series, Daleks have usually been depicted speaking in English; however, in "Journey's End" a squad of Daleks operating in Germany is heard shouting orders in German. This suggests that the Dalek travel machine is capable of translating speech into any language, and that, like the speech of most aliens featured in the series, Dalek language only sounds like English to the Doctor's companions because it is being translated by the TARDIS.

Monster Files: Carrionites

The Carrionites, as seen in "The Shakespeare Code" (2007), are a race of witch-like beings. The species originates from the Fourteen Stars of the Rexel Planetary Configuration. They use advanced science which appears much like magic and voodoo. Unlike humans, who use numbers, maths and science to advance and split the atom, the Carrionites use words to manipulate the universe and defy physics.

The Carrionites appear to be possess some unknown ability to discover a person's true name; although Lilith was in the room when the Doctor and Martha Jones introduce themselves to Shakespeare she later remarks "there is no name" when trying to name the Doctor but being there when the doctor introduces himself does not explain that Lilith named rose. In the "old" times of the universe, they were banished through powerful words by the Eternals.

Monster Files: Adipose

The Adipose were seen in the episode "Partners in Crime". In the story, their breeding world was lost, causing them to turn to the alien "Miss Foster" to create a new generation. She formulated a drug that would cause human fat (anatomically: 'adipose tissue') to parthenogenetically morph into Adipose children.

This process is completely harmless to the host beyond the loss of body fat. In an emergency situation the process can be accelerated by using the host's bone, hair and muscle tissue as well as fat, but this makes the Adipose ill and weak, and kills the host by completely using up their body.
